How to View Biographical Information for Figures in the Talmud

In addition to the texts themselves, you can also find biographical information about various rabbis and biblical personalities named in the Mishnah, Babylonian Talmud, and Jerusalem Talmud.

To find biographical information:

  1. Check to ensure the text you’re reading is from the Mishnah, the Babylonian Talmud, or the Jerusalem Talmud.
  2. Place your cursor over the name of a rabbi or biblical personality. If there is biographical information about this person on Sefaria, a dotted line will appear under the name in question.
  3. Click on the name to open the Resource Panel, where you will find information about the person in question.

Please note: 

  • This feature is not yet available on the Sefaria mobile apps.
  • Biographies for the rabbis of the Jerusalem Talmud are only available in Hebrew.
