How to Sort Search Results

When searching for a text in the Sefaria Library, search results can be sorted by relevance or chronology, as well as filtered by text category and specific books. You can also opt to see only sources that exactly match your query. 

Please note: Sorting is not possible on Topic pages. 

To filter sources by text category:

1. Type your query into the search bar on the homepage and on your keyboard, press return (on a Mac) or press enter (on a PC) or select the first option in the dropdown menu. 
2. Click on the checkboxes preceding any text categories (e.g. Tanakh or Jewish Thought) you’d like to include in your search results, found on the right side of the screen.
3. To see only results in a specific book (e.g. Exodus):
   • Click on the arrow to the right of the text category to open another dropdown menu.
   • Click on the checkboxes preceding any books you’d like to include in your search results.

To sort sources by relevance or chronology:

1. Type your query into the search bar on the homepage and on your keyboard, press return (on a Mac) or press enter (on a PC) or select the first option in the dropdown menu.

2. Results are listed by relevance. To change to chronological order, click on the Relevance button and select Chronological from the dropdown menu.

   

    

To see search source results that exactly match your query:

1. Type your query into the search bar on the homepage and select the first option in the dropdown menu. This option is indicated by a magnifying glass icon and preceded by the words Search for.

2. Below the tabs, click on the Exact Phrase button.
