Quick Guide: Meet the Sefaria MCPs

Sefaria’s MCPs (Model Context Protocols) connect your AI assistant of choice to the texts in the Sefaria  Library. When you connect one of the Sefaria MCPs to an AI assistant, it creates a direct line between the AI model and either the Sefaria Library or Developers on Sefaria (home to Sefaria’s technical documentation). When the MCPs are enabled, you can ask the AI assistant to prioritize information in Sefaria's collection when searching.

Note: The Sefaria MCPs can only be used with paid AI assistant accounts, such as ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro. 

Sefaria has two MCPs, each with its own distinct purpose.

To connect your AI assistant to Sefaria’s MCP:

  1. Make sure you have a paid account with your AI assistant of choice.
  2. Copy the relevant MCP URL:
    1. Sefaria Texts MCP: https://mcp.sefaria.org/sse
    2. Sefaria Developers MCP: https://developers.sefaria.org/mcp
  3. Ensure no auth option is toggled
  4. Add to your AI Tool:
    1. Claude: Go to settings, add as a Custom Connector, enable.
    2. Cursor: Configure in MCP settings
    3. ChatGPT: Go to settings, then plugins, navigate to browse plugins, click on the "plus" button, configure accordingly
    4. Other Tools: Use the MCP URL in your client's server configuration
  5. Start Exploring:
    1. Using the Sefaria Texts MCP, ask your questions about Jewish texts. For example:
      1. "What does Genesis 1:1 say?" or "Find me talmudic discussions about kindness"
    2. Using the Sefaria Developers MCP, ask the AI assistant to write code by pulling from our API. For example:
      1. “Help me build a GUI which uses the Sefaria API to focus on Sforno's commentary on Genesis.”
