How to Add a Source From the Sefaria Library to a Google Doc

Sefaria for Google Docs allows you to add any source from the library into a Google Doc. You can use the extension to add any span of text — from a single verse to an entire chapter. To get started, first ensure that you have installed the browser extension.

To add a source to a Google Doc:

  1. Place your cursor in the location where you intend to add the desired source.
  2. In the header of your Google Docs interface, click on Extensions to open a dropdown menu.
  3. Hover over Sefaria for Google Docs to open an additional dropdown menu.
  4. Click Add Sources with Sefaria to open a sidebar on the right-hand side of your screen.
  5. In the search bar at the top of the sidebar, type the citation for the source you want to add.
  6. Two dropdown menus will appear, offering format, edition, and (when relevant) translation options. Select your desired layout from the indicated dropdown menus.
  7. Click the Add Source button.

Please note: 

  • You can add a source to a Google Doc whether you know the exact citation or not. Once you begin typing the name of the book, several options will appear in a dropdown menu. Click on your desired option to select it and continue with step six.
  • To add a specific span of text, specify the range you have in mind. For example:
    • To add the first verse of the book of Genesis, type Genesis 1:1 .
    • To add the first nine verses of the book of Genesis type Genesis 1:1-9 .
  • The text that appears in the document will correspond to the exact citation you select.
