How to Link Sources to the Sefaria Library

When using Sefaria for Google Docs, you can both add any text from the library into a Google Doc and add links that connect those texts to their original sources on Sefaria — in just a few clicks This enables anyone interacting with your Google Doc to see the resource in context. To get started, first ensure that you have installed the browser extension.

To link a source in a a Google Doc to the Sefaria library:

  1. Type the citation you’d like to link into a Google Doc.
  2. In the header of your Google Docs interface, click on Extensions to open a dropdown menu.
  3. Hover over Sefaria for Google Docs to open an additional dropdown menu.
  4. Click Link Texts with Sefaria to open a sidebar on the right-hand side of your screen.
  5. Click the Link Texts button to begin linking.

Please note: 

  • This tool adds links to all citations in your document that exist in the Sefaria library at once. Therefore, it is not necessary to repeat this process for each individual citation. To save time, use this feature either when your document is complete or periodically, as you work.
  • If you can’t locate or link a source, it could mean (a) it’s not yet available in the Sefaria library, or (b) it’s time to adjust your search. Some Jewish texts go by multiple names, and Hebrew titles are often transliterated in a variety of ways. Therefore, it’s possible that your source is available on Sefaria with a different title or spelling. Search for your text in the library to verify the spelling to use for your citation when linking with Sefaria for Google Docs.
