Quick Guide: Meet the Sefaria Library Resource Panel

When exploring the texts in the Sefaria Library, you have a variety of tools and supplemental information available to enhance your learning experience. In order to access these, simply click on any passage of text to open the Resource Panel. There, you’ll find language options, background about the text you’re reading, reference tools, options for downloading resources to your device, and much more. 

Note: When using Sefaria Library App, the Resource Panel is found at the bottom of your device’s screen and includes a different set of options than those available when using the Library in a web browser (see below for details). A long-press on any passage of text will open the Resource Panel when using the Sefaria Library App.

Tools and Information Found in the Resource Panel

  • About This Text: Click to view information about the text that you’re reading, who authored it (when relevant), which edition you’re viewing, and download options. Learn more about this feature. 
  • Table of Contents [Browser Only]: Click to view the structure of the text you’re reading and navigate to your desired section of the text in question. For example, when reading the Torah, you can navigate by Torah portion (parashah), aliyah, chapter, and verse. Learn how to use this feature.
  • Search in This Text [Browser Only]: Click to see a search field you can use to find a specific part of the particular text you’re reading. To use, type a word or phrase in English or Hebrew into the search bar and see results from within the text you’re viewing at the time. (This search will not yield results from elsewhere in the Library.) Learn how to use this feature.
  • Translations: Click to find and select a preferred language, translation, or edition of the text you’re reading. Learn how to use this feature.

In the RELATED TEXTS section of the Resource Panel, you'll find a list of texts from the library that reference the primary text, organized by category. Learn more about this feature.

Note: If a category is not listed, that means there are no texts in the Sefaria Library within that category with a known linked connection to the primary text.

In the RESOURCES section of the Resource Panel, you'll find additional sources of context and connections to other texts and ideas, both within the library and around the web. 

  • Web Pages: Find content on the web citing your selected passage. Content is displayed from hundreds of websites using the Sefaria Linker to link citations.
  • Manuscripts: If available, images of historical manuscripts of the text you’re viewing, including Tanakh, Talmud, and a small section of the Passover haggadah. Many of these are made available by the National Library of Israel. Learn more about this feature.

In the TOOLS section of the Resource Panel, you'll see tools and other resources for enhanced learning or text sharing. Where noted, these tools are only available when logged into your Sefaria Account. 

  • Add to Sheet [login required]: A tool for adding a text to a Sheet on Voices on Sefaria. Learn more.
  • Dictionaries: Find definitions of Hebrew and Aramaic words. Learn more.
  • Compare Text: A feature allowing you to place any two or more texts side by side while scrolling through each text independently. Learn more.
  • Add Notes [login required]: A feature that allows you to add private notes on a text for your future reference. Learn more.
  • Feedback [login required]: Send us questions or comments regarding a specific text, as well as any errors you may find during your reading. 

 

When you click on Advanced, at the bottom of the TOOLS section, you'll see:

  • Add Translation [login required] Use this feature to add your own Sefaria community translation to the library. Learn more.
  • Add Connection [login required]: Use this feature to link the primary text to another text in the library.
